Some of the materials used to make kitchen countertops include laminates (also known as Formica®), ceramic tile, wood, fiber cement, solid surface material, and natural stone. Solid surfacing and natural stone tend to be the most expensive materials, with granite becoming increasingly popular and relatively affordable in recent times. Prices range from $10 to $100 per square foot with laminate being the least expensive material and solid surface and natural stone the most costly. Some of the factors that influence the price of countertops include the type of material used, layout, edge and backsplash design, and sink cutouts. Also, it's helpful to know the characteristics of the different countertop materials to know which will best suit your needs. For example, marble is elegant and beautiful, but is subject to scratching and breaking. As such, it is usually recommended for use in bathrooms and around fireplaces, rather than in kitchens. Granite, however, is used in many new homes for kitchen countertops due to its beauty, durability and relative affordability. Laminates, while inexpensive, are subject to staining, scratching and burning. In addition, laminates often have seams, which can be difficult to clean and also are vulnerable to water damage.
