Kitchen Blending

Jan and Paul Wicklund of Wayzata, Minnesota, were ready for a change that would transform their dreary kitchen into a cheery entry, center and social hub. "We wanted to update our kitchen by enlarging the dining and food preparation areas--making it a brighter, more livable space," says Jan. Square footage was added with a four-season addition, which replaced an existing greenhouse that had attached to the kitchen through sliding glass doors.

The elimination of the greenhouse outside allowed for a higher, more appealing ceiling height inside. All-white cabinets lighten and brighten the space, replacing dark oak cupboards. The central-island design and location welcome guests to gather over coffee. The desk area is a new feature that offers the couple one convenient spot to organize incoming information.

Jan and Paul were determined that the old greenhouse be replaced by an addition that better complemented and blended with the exterior of their home.

Large windows and a glass door provide the Wicklunds with a beautiful view of backyard wildlife, flower gardens, and pool area. Some of the windows can be opened to fresh air and birdsongs. The addition was built above grade, with a concrete block foundation allowing for in-floor hot-water heat. Suspended shelves made of polished brass and glass, and a granite-surface plant counter just below, provide the right conditions for growing and enjoying favorite blooms.
