While some people go for the look of a rustic country house, or a small scale recreation of a traditional five-star restaurant, others like their kitchen to have a contemporary look: the sleek, minimalist design that uses bright light and simple geometric shapes to accentuate a feeling of high functionality.

Of course, contemporary designed kitchens can mean a whole variety of things. "Modern" no longer means you have to live in the 1970's version of what everyone thought the future would be, with stark colors, shining surfaces and funny pod-shaped furniture. And your choice of color and material is much broader then if you were going for the French Country look or something more antique looking. You're not limited to nature-like greens or lavender. Today, stainless steel fixtures (maybe rubbed down to give a little bit of idiosyncrasy) are quite popular, as is sacrificing wall space (and storage) for larger windows to give your kitchen a bright, clean feel.

But whatever the choice, what you do get is simplicity and confidence; an uncluttered nuts and bolts look that conveys openness and efficiency.
