A kitchen island, in its most basic form, is simply more room to work. And in most homes, a kitchen can always use more space. With a properly placed island (usually in the center in closed room kitchens), the amount of workspace increases drastically. In open kitchens, common to condos and apartments, a kitchen island is the perfect way to divide the kitchen from the living area, and, more importantly, allow the person working in the kitchen to interact with a guest, without the guest getting in the way. If these islands have sinks or appliances, than your kitchen is completely designed for both convenience and sociability as you can do the dishes while facing visitors who may be finishing their wine in the living room.

Actually, some people have enjoyed the idea of the island so much that closed off kitchens have been turned into open kitchens by making walls into half walls that serve as islands between the kitchen and the rest of the house. This slightly more extreme remodeling can completely change the spatial dynamic of your kitchen and the whole house. Just another way a small idea turns into a revolution!
